In 1916, the National Association of Real Estate Exchanges changed its name to The National Association of Real Estate Boards (NAREB) and adopted the term Realtor® for its members. This term and its derivatives were trademarked on Sept. 13, 1949, and Jan. 10, 1950.
In 1972 the organization became the National Association of Realtors® (NAR).
Today, membership has surpassed 1.2 million members with 54 state associations, including Guam, Puerto Rico, and the US Virgin Islands territories.
